Artist Statement
Drawing inspiration from speculative themes of science fiction, ancient mythology, video games,
board games, Japanese anime, and comic books, Kass creates alternate realms that expand upon the
imagination and dialogue of personal myths and contested archetypes.
Kass’s works evoke a certain light-heartedness, which is no stranger to the Kitsch and Kawaii, often
embodying appearances of semi-abstract or elusive entities.
Her latest preoccupation is with the myth of the unicorn, one which has a myriad of narratives over
the course of history, spanning the middle ages in Europe to contemporary times. Kass puts a local
spin on the interpretation of the unicorn, likening the universal consciousness to the unicorn while
questioning the unicorn's propensity.
According to Kass, the unicorn is perceived as an oxymoron - a malleable vessel oscillating between
spiritual enlightenment and material attainment, positing a paradigm of societal struggle and human
complexity. The horn of the unicorn is known as an alicorn, a central motif in Kass works, bearing
a multitude of allusions- a prized totem, a hypothetical relic, a magic potion, and a sacred value -
symbolic of the immaterial transcendence and material desire of the collective consciousness.
